Couching Life Practicalities
Extra Curricular Activities: To encourage and promote social, artistic and sporting activities outside of normal school hours we offer a broad range of after school activities. Each term a list of clubs is announced and pupils sign up for their choices. Pupils can select a club each day if they wish!
School Clubs: Extra-curricular activities and clubs are available to all children in the school. These are organised by fully trained and professional teachers. Teacher led clubs usually take place between 14:15pm and 15:30pm on Sunday through to Thursday afternoon. The clubs vary each term, but a typical selection might include: Karate, Volley Ball, Foot Ball and Gymnastics.
Al Worood Academy Private School, a large and private, English medium International School having its purpose build campuses for boys and girls at Muroor Road in Abu Dhabi, was conceptualized by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Nuwais who is having a firm belief in the importance of education to mankind. School started its journey in June 1982 and for the period of 30 years is continuously striving for the improvement in level of education and meeting the requirements of the growing demand in the number of students.
His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Nuwais did not save an effort to enhance the school’s performance, pursued educational approach aimed at leading the advancement of education and level of preparation of more generation capacity to meet the requirements of the new era rich with knowledge and science. He employed highly qualified staff and experienced educators who enabled our graduates to join the most distinguished universities in the United Arab Emirates as well as abroad and to achieve outstanding results in A-Levels examinations.

- In 1986-1987 the school was accredited as a centre for (GCE) and (GCSE).
- In 1995-1996 our school became a member of (ECIS) and (NESA) and was also accredited a centre for the (IGCSE)
In 1996-1997 a new recognition was added to our school’s accomplishments when it was chosen by the CITA as one of the best 53 schools outside the USA and over the period school gained very warm response and from the parents and students and achieved the highest number of students of 2963 in Academic Year 2008-2009.
School has student mix consisting of;
- 56% of enrollment are boys, 44 % girls
- 59% of enrollment is UAE Nationals; remainder of students are almost all Muslim Arab expatriates
School facilities include 2 libraries, three computer laboratories, six science laboratories (2 each of biology, physics, and chemistry), music rooms, gymnasium, large stage, a separate KG play area, and a small artificial grass football pitch field.
The school is licensed by Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) under which the Ministry of Education now functions. The school is inspected by ADEC and is accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and AdvancED. The school is also inspected by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). We are a member of the College Board (code #697003), European Council of International Schools, Council of International Schools, and the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (associate member only). Al Worood Academy is a center for the UK school examinations of Edexcel (GCE AS/A level) and CIE (IGCSE), and the American iBT-TOEFL, PSAT and SAT tests.
The school’s two-acre campus is a 20-minute drive from the Abu Dhabi Corniche. The academic year is from September to June and consists of three terms with a three-week winter holiday (students) and a two-week spring holiday (students). The school is closed for all national holidays (such as National Day observance) and for the Islamic religious holidays (two Eid’s, Prophet’s Birthday, etc.) The students’ school day is 7:50a.m. until 2:10p.m., Sunday to Thursday inclusive. UAE time zone is GMT/UTC +4 all year.
CURRICULUM:
British System stream: In Grades 9 and 10 the school offers a set of six core subjects: English (second language), Mathematics, Arabic (first language), Biology, Chemistry and Physics, plus one or two subjects taken from History, Business Studies, Accounting and Computer Studies. Students are expected to take 7 or 8 subjects. The two-year syllabi (available at www.cie.org.uk) for all these subjects follow those for the IGCSE (equivalent to the O-level) examinations of the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) in England. In addition, students must take Arabic and Islamic Studies (Muslims only) as specified by the UAE Ministry of Education. The syllabi for these two subjects follow Ministry guidelines.
In Grades 11 and 12 the school offers students three GCE A-levels subjects: Mathematics (9371 – core C1, C2, C3, C4, with mechanics M1, M2); Chemistry (9CH07); and either Physics (9PH07) or Biology (9BI07). The two-year syllabi (available at www.edexcel.com) for all these subjects follow those of the Edexcel examinations board in England. Additionally, students take school English Language and Literature, Arabic and Islamic Studies (Muslims only). The English syllabus was developed by the school and includes TOEFL iBT preparation. The Arabic and Islamic Studies syllabi are those of the UAE Ministry of Education. GCE A-level Arabic (9AR01) is an option in Grade 11.
High School System stream: In Grades 9 and 10 all students study English, Arabic, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, history, computer studies, PE, Islamic Studies (for Muslims, psychology and art (girls only) and, in Grade 9 only, social studies in Arabic (for Arabic speakers).
In Grades 11 and 12 all students study English, Arabic, mathematics, computer studies, physics or business studies, chemistry or psychology or child development (girls only), biology or accounting, history (Grade 11 only), art (girls only), PE, and Islamic Studies (for Muslims).
The syllabi for these subjects were developed by the school, apart from Arabic and Islamic Studies, which follow the syllabi of the UAE Ministry of Education. In this stream students write only school examinations and are awarded an Al Worood High School Certificate upon successful completion of Grade 12. The UAE Ministry of Education equates the school’s High School Certificate with their Thanawiyah (Government School Leaving Certificate) when accompanied by the required TOEFL (minimum 61 iBT) and SAT Reasoning Test scores (Math score only – minimum 400). Students must also pass the Ministry’s examination in Arabic.
